Ultimately, the balloon crashes to the ground in an explosion.
She does do this in the musical, but it is much more condensed and features more dialogue.
The sequence with Elphaba falling before she starts to fly is brand new too.
After this moment of reflection and connection with her past, Elphaba is truly ready to defy gravity.
