This true-to-life “how I became a criminal” story needs to be seen to be believed.
Netflix’s newest hitcrimedrama,Outlaw, is based on the real-life story of Brazil’s Raquel de Oliveira.
Oliveira was born incredibly poor in Rio’s Rocinha favela in 1961.
Her early life was one sadly typical of many who have grown up in Brazil’s poorest neighborhoods.
Drugs, sex work, and violent crime were the norm during Oliveira’s early life.
She would never see or hear from him again.
Oliveira essentially went through her formative years working within Rio’s many brothels.
At 25, Oliveira started dating and eventually married renowned drug lord Ednaldo de Souza, or ‘Naldo.’
Just as Naldo was respected and feared, so was Oliviera.
During this time, Oliveira became known as particularly ruthless.
She was not going to let anyone stand in her way, and everyone knew it.
However, this growing dependency on cocaine would eventually become too much for Oliveira.
“Writing gives me pleasure.
It takes the place of cocaine.
It helps me flee from the pain,” Oliveira told AFP (viaGlobal Times) in 2015.
Oliveira is now 63 years old and has been sober for nearly 20 years.
Outlawis now streaming on Netflix.
