The ethnicity of Sersi wasn’t always going to fit Gemma Chan’s Marvel Studios hero.
Gemma Chan’sSersi inMarvel Studios’Eternalswasn’t always planned to be portrayed as the ethnicity audiences saw on screen.
Chan was among the massive, star-studded cast of the MCU’s 2021 cosmic epic.
While the moviemight not be the most well-rated projectthe studio has made (it’s not the worst!
), many still have a soft spot forChloe Zhao’sblockbuster debut.
The project actuallygave Chan her second role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Previously, she played Minn-Erva in 2019’sCaptain Marvel.
Some of the early talks about Sersi presented her as a woman of color.
Newly revealed concept art showcased just that, with Sersi depicted very differently than Chan’s Asian heritage.
As the script developed, it always had Sersi at the heart of the film and the team.
Another illustration sees Sersi’s deep greens faded, instead favoring a brown-grey aesthetic.
But she doesn’t always believe in her own abilities.
In this film, we’re going to watch her go on this journey of self-discovery.
For all the indie film fans, this is emotional."
Was Janelle Monae Almost Sersi?
Monae was mostrecently seen in Netflix’sGlass Onion, and prior to that, she starred in movies likeHidden FiguresandMoonlight.
Some would likely argue it’s one of theMCU’s most diverse and inclusive entries yet.
Hopefully, some form of anEternalssequelis at least being discussed at Marvel Studios.
There are plenty of loose ends just waiting to be wrapped up.
Eternalsis now streaming onDisney+.
